Foreigners will be able to apply online for their visas (resident status of Japan) by themselves using My Number Card within this year (2021).

One thing to note is that the immigration office is likely to have access to your information associated with your My Number Card, such as your income and tax payment record.

My Number is an individual number currently used for tax purposes.
The Japanese government encourages use of My Number Card by providing with JPY5,000-worth points to be given to your e-money account (for cashless payment). My Number Card is scheduled to be used as health insurance card in October, 2021 (TBD).
